The British are coming to Las Vegas on July 14th for another
battle. Not the Battle of Germantown or the Battle of Trenton, but the
Battle of Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Too bad Oscar
De La Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions couldn’t have scheduled the
fight for the Fourth of July. Philly’s Danny Garcia could have come in
dressed like Uncle Sam ala Apollo Creed.The Brits are represented by Amir Khan, a fighter from Bolton, England. He was supposed to face Lamont Peterson in a rematch for the WBA and IBF junior welterweight belts that he lost to Peterson in D.C. last December. But the new champ tested positive for an illegal substance (Synthetic Testosterone, a muscle enhancer) and was stripped of the titles, so the May 19th fight was cancelled. Khan continued to train even without an opponent and even cleaned house by hiring a new conditioning coach, Ruben Tabares. Tabares thinks he is a real Harry Houdini. He likes to control everything about his fighter’s life and always has a few tricks up his sleeve. He feeds Khan only organic foods and spring water in a constant fear of E. coli and other bacteria. He makes Khan brush his teeth with toothpaste that has no fluoride in it. He says fluoride is like rat poison! He even examines his boxer’s bowel movements to help rid Khan of lactic acids. (I wonder how Dempsey, Louis or Marciano would feel about all that!)
